Gaia - Number 2 in Series of 30 Goddesses in 30 Days

In the wee hours of the morning, while the Moon still reigned the sky, I began on my second Goddess painting for my self challenge. No matter how I try to change my schedule around for creating, I still find myself more inspired at night and so I follow my intuition. (You can read more about this self challenge I am partaking here http://jeannefryart.blogspot.com/2015/01/30-goddesses-in-30-days-artistic.html   )
While my fur babies lay sleeping nearby I spread out my Peerless Transparent Watercolors and began. I knew immediately that Gaia was going to come to the surface this evening. This Greek Goddess, sometimes referred to as the Great Mother, is the Divine that sees over the Earth and its life force.

Her concept came quickly, leading me to give her a skin tone that resembled an earthy landscape and lips like the sea. A small sparrow sits on her shoulder, in reverence of her spirit.
I used colors that represented the Earth and the Sea, giving her a warm and loving essence.

The painting of the Goddesses has lit a fire in my belly, and I can't wait to see who will show up on my paper tomorrow.

Gaia has been SOLD
You can order Prints of her, as well as tote bags and more in my Society6 shop here

Dona Nobis Pacem - Grant Us Peace

My entire adult life has been spent seeking, sharing, and Being Peace. I strive to surround myself with people who live their lives in a peaceful way, and try to inspire those who struggle to obtain it.  When I was young, I was blessed to grow up in an area of Upstate NY that was rich in cultural diversity. "Normal" to me was being immersed in that melting pot that was defined by so very many cultures and religions. My memories are filled with weekend events - celebrations, dinners, and dances held at different cultural community centers and churches. Everyone was welcome, and everyone would partake. This place had been a destination for many immigrants years back due to the opportunities for work. I remember my grandparents telling me about the old shoe and cigar factories, which were popular places for jobs. As the area grew, more and more industry came. Families were proud and grateful to have life long jobs that allowed them to take care of their families. There ...

The Goddess of Autumn - Number 8 in the 30 Goddesses in 30 Days Series

My natural instincts guided me to the creation of the Goddess who represents my favorite time of year, Autumn. This magical space in time is symbolic to me of Earthiness with a Splash of color - it is the time when the air has a little nip to it and we bring out our sweaters and scarves,  large harvests are gathered from the Earth, and the leaves begin to turn those brilliant colors reminiscent of paint on a palette. In Greek mythology the seasons are represented by a triad of deities called a Horae. The "withering" time of Autumn and Winter are watched over by "Carpo". Carpo was specifically in charge of the ripening of the harvest and Autumn, and was joined by "Thallo" and "Auxo" who represented Spring and Summer. The Horae was responsible for time and the seasons, so deeply connected to the rhythms of life of all beings.  My 8th painting is of Carpo. I wanted to bring a hint of her spirit with the earthy colors and the beginning...

Medeina Goddess of the Forest - Number 6 of the 30 Goddesses in 30 Days Series

I have been enchanted with the growing process of the "30 Goddesses in 30 Days" challenge that I have given myself. In a very short period of time the creation of a Goddess painting a day has become a blended part of my day as much as having my tea and eggs for breakfast. Part of the passion is the subject matter of the Goddesses. The other part of the passion is the growth I'm receiving working with the Peerless Transparent Watercolors and the styles involved. Today I finished Number 6 in the series, being "Medeina". Medeina is a Lithuanian Goddess of the Forests. She watches over the trees and the animals who lived in those magical woodlands. Some Forest Goddesses assist hunters, although Medeina's focus is not for helping the hunters but is for protecting the forest and its animal kingdom.  My depiction of her brings her out in a natural world sense, wearing a mask of leaves so she can walk amongst and be a part of that which she watches over...
