Flora, the Roman Goddess of Renewal and Spring - 30 Goddesses in 30 Days Series

The cold bleak winter lingers over the calendar like a slow molasses poured over breakfast. It tastes sweet at first, delightful even, but after time those monotonous grey landscapes nag at us for a change. We miss those vibrant colors and new daily blooms that make us feel like we are witnessing magic again and again. Whether the melancholy is literally for Earth's season, or for the season in our soul, we begin to ache for the arrival of Spring and the blooms of Renewal.

As we forge through the beginning of February, I myself am longing for Spring and thoughts of the Roman Goddess, Flora, come to mind.
Flora is Number 10 in my "30 Goddesses in 30 Days" watercolor series. As I sit at my painting table in the studio, the faint light from the heavy overcast sky tries to peak through the windows and  the cold rain creates puddles in the yard. Flora arrives on the paper with her wavy brunette hair. By her expression I can feel she is ready to bloom  as well. The shadows of winter begin to melt away from her face, and hints of vibrant pink and magenta start to color her creamy skin and rich earthy hair. Flower blossoms open around her face and she can now Breathe, content and ready for the daily miracles that she will create. She is renewed, alive, and growing.

Dona Nobis Pacem - Grant Us Peace

My entire adult life has been spent seeking, sharing, and Being Peace. I strive to surround myself with people who live their lives in a peaceful way, and try to inspire those who struggle to obtain it.  When I was young, I was blessed to grow up in an area of Upstate NY that was rich in cultural diversity. "Normal" to me was being immersed in that melting pot that was defined by so very many cultures and religions. My memories are filled with weekend events - celebrations, dinners, and dances held at different cultural community centers and churches. Everyone was welcome, and everyone would partake. This place had been a destination for many immigrants years back due to the opportunities for work. I remember my grandparents telling me about the old shoe and cigar factories, which were popular places for jobs. As the area grew, more and more industry came. Families were proud and grateful to have life long jobs that allowed them to take care of their families. There ...

Mermaid and Patina Moon

Mermaid and Patina Moon In the past she would swim to the surface to sit along the water's edge and watch the humans. She used to find them quite magical. Most mermaids thought so. But over time she lost her intrigue. She began seeing their shadow sides, and how their fears evolved into hate. She couldn't stand to watch them being so mean to one another anymore and decided to remain in the safe and loving waters of the cove.  As the years passed she began to change. Merfolk don't age like humans, with wrinkles and such. Merfolk begin to patina when they age, a colorful sheen cloaks them, most especially their tail. As she began to patina, she became hidden in the waters even more. She blended into her surroundings with precision. This made the Moon ever so sad because he loved Fin the most.  It seemed that every night it would take longer and longer to find her. Finally one cold night in November he called to Fin and presented her with a gift wrapped in stars. I...
