This Goddess carries no name.....for now, because for now she is in a self induced dormancy. She has laid down all of the extra baggage that she has been carrying around, all that luggage that has been weighing on her. Like washing her face before bedtime, she has cleansed herself for this trans formative  period. On the outside she appears quiet and neutral almost barren, like a blank canvas.  On the inside, OH on the inside,  there is a swirl of activity. She has planted her seeds, made her wishes, put her intentions out to the Universe, done her internal personal work, and soon the very delicate flower buds will begin to emerge. She is Starting Over. This time is for Her, time to Heal, time to be Selfish, time to simply and beautifully Be. She is rebuilding her self, piece by piece, taking all that she has learned and now putting all those pieces together that create her magnificent Spirit. She is seizing this new Season as her Own. She carries with her the Wisdom of the Four Directions. Each direction has its dedicated space on the spiritual journey, and its own element that helps to fuel it. Honoring the four directions allows to not only be in balance with the Earth, but to be in balance within ourselves.  The East (air element) is symbolic for New Beginnings. It is here where the sun rises, our projects are in their birthing stages, and transformations are in their infancy stages. The South (fire element) is a stage of action. It is being in the "present moment", and living in the present moment. Here you are living life passionately and creating the things that you want. The West (water element) is symbolic of emotional healing. When we are here, we spend dedicated contemplation on "who we are". We ALL have a Story, filled with ups and downs, trials and tribulations, joys and accomplishments. I myself believe that it is possible to re-write our story, in essence I think that do-overs can happen. It doesn't erase the previous chapters, but allows us to grow toward loftier heights as well as deeper in the soul.  These beliefs are what led me to the creation of the "Survivor Goddess" - She who Carries Phoenix Medicine. She is the 11th Goddess in my watercolor painting series "30 Goddesses in 30 Days". I love that she emerged as number 11, such a meaningful number in numerology. [The Number 11 is a Master Number, symbolic of New Beginnings. It is one of a pure and intuitive heart. The cold bleak winter lingers over the calendar like a slow molasses poured over breakfast. It tastes sweet at first, delightful even, but after time those monotonous grey landscapes nag at us for a change. We miss those vibrant colors and new daily blooms that make us feel like we are witnessing magic again and again. Whether the melancholy is literally for Earth's season, or for the season in our soul, we begin to ache for the arrival of Spring and the blooms of Renewal. As we forge through the beginning of February, I myself am longing for Spring and thoughts of the Roman Goddess, Flora, come to mind.  Flora is Number 10 in my "30 Goddesses in 30 Days" watercolor series. As I sit at my painting table in the studio, the faint light from the heavy overcast sky tries to peak through the windows and  the cold rain creates puddles in the yard. I am a woman who likes the "in between", the moments of Transition, or the grey areas. I have always been intrigued by the bridge between earth and sky, and the morning and evening twilight. These moments to me are the magic time, the times when anything is possible, when things are up for interpretation, and when we can change the course of things. And so,  I feel  this is when we are most connected with our own intuitive senses and need to trust in ourselves as we walk the path. These thoughts are what inspired my 9th Goddess painting in the Goddess series, Aurora  Goddess of the Dawn. Aurora represents the Dawn, the beginning of the Morning Twilight. For me, this is the bridge between day and night, when the Sun is thinking of making its appearance yet the moon and stars are still at the party. All of the elements of day and night are present. My natural instincts guided me to the creation of the Goddess who represents my favorite time of year, Autumn. This magical space in time is symbolic to me of Earthiness with a Splash of color - it is the time when the air has a little nip to it and we bring out our sweaters and scarves,  large harvests are gathered from the Earth, and the leaves begin to turn those brilliant colors reminiscent of paint on a palette. In Greek mythology the seasons are represented by a triad of deities called a Horae. The "withering" time of Autumn and Winter are watched over by "Carpo". Carpo was specifically in charge of the ripening of the harvest and Autumn, and was joined by "Thallo" and "Auxo" who represented Spring and Summer. The Horae was responsible for time and the seasons, so deeply connected to the rhythms of life of all beings.  My 8th painting is of Carpo. I was intrigued with this particular Sun Goddess, as she has changed greatly throughout history. "Bast" was the ancient Egyptian Lion Goddess of the Sunset, a fierce protector and warrior. Later in time she became known as "Bastet", and instead of being associated with the Lioness, she was connected to the highly revered Cat, and known to be a Protector especially of women, children, and families. Mothers could look to her for fertility and protection of their young ones. (When the Greeks later occupied Egypt, she became associated with the moon instead of the sun) Her name translated  to "She of the Ointment Jar". She was often depicted on ornate alabaster jars that held exquisite perfumes and ointments, and was known as the "perfumed protector". I have been enchanted with the growing process of the "30 Goddesses in 30 Days" challenge that I have given myself. In a very short period of time the creation of a Goddess painting a day has become a blended part of my day as much as having my tea and eggs for breakfast. Part of the passion is the subject matter of the Goddesses. The other part of the passion is the growth I'm receiving working with the Peerless Transparent Watercolors and the styles involved. Today I finished Number 6 in the series, being "Medeina". Medeina is a Lithuanian Goddess of the Forests. She watches over the trees and the animals who lived in those magical woodlands. Some Forest Goddesses assist hunters, although Medeina's focus is not for helping the hunters but is for protecting the forest and its animal kingdom.  My depiction of her brings her out in a natural world sense, wearing a mask of leaves so she can walk amongst and be a part of that which she watches over...

I have a deep love and affection for the Venetian Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia), maybe its the culture or the concept but more than that its the pure Art in its expression. The Masks have always inspired me, their elaborate beauty and symbolism. I appreciate them as an art form and their symbolism intrigues me asking "When wearing the Mask is the True person revealing themselves?"  "Are they able to allow themselves to express their inner most secrets?" This painting, "The Goddess of Mardi Gras and Celebration", is my portrayal of the Spirit of Mardi Gras, her deep down spirit emanating for all to see.  My third painting in my 30 Goddesses in 30 Days series is of the Greek Goddess Hera. She is symbolic of Love and Relationships, and is representative of all the facets of womanhood. Often affiliated with the peacock feather, this speaks of beauty and luxury, rebirth and renewal. Many times as women are navigating their life path they experience stages of Personal Growth  and Spiritual Renewal, making the Goddess Hera a wise one to look to. She was known to watch over women throughout their entire life and decision making processes - through their relationships, child rearing, independence, and stability. In essence, Hera is a Goddess nurturing the state of Womanhood. I resonated strongly with the painting during its creation, contemplating her meaning and how it touched my own life. In the wee hours of the morning, while the Moon still reigned the sky, I began on my second Goddess painting for my self challenge. No matter how I try to change my schedule around for creating, I still find myself more inspired at night and so I follow my intuition. With the entrance of winter and the beginning of a new year, I feel pulled to go deeper within myself and do some re-inventing of sorts. My inner artist desires to be challenged, to explore new styles, mediums, and approaches. I decided to partake in a challenge to  myself, 30 Goddesses in 30 Days. Through this study, I am exploring more free forms of painting using Peerless Transparent Watercolors, a medium new to me. My goal is to capture the essence of an emotion or  a glimpse into the spirit of a goddess, and do so in a more minimalistic style. Normally my painting is very detailed and labor intensive, done in a Contemporary Folk style with acrylics.  My intention for this study is to allow myself a "freeing" of sorts, while creating a simple yet profound subject within the woman essence.
